Ms. Bonnier has been a delightful staple of the Detroit jazz scene for
many years, on occasion performing as a part of the Detroit Piano Summit
with colleagues Sir Roland Hanna, Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan
and Barry Harris. Here she is presented with her quartet, bassist
Paul Keller, vibist Cary Kocher and drummer Pete Siers, in a wonderful mix
of swingers and ballads that are blessed with arrangements strong in creativity
and musicianship. Keller is recently returned from his worldwide tour with
Diana Krall, following their blockbuster Nat Cole tribute CD. A careful
listen to Kocher and Siers will attest to their skills.

This production features several standards, three original Bonnier tunes
and three Bonnier vocals. The latter include the tender Kern-Fields "Remind
Me," "Foolish/Favorite Things," a devilish intertwining of
the two standards in which Bonnier applies the lyric of one to the melody
of the other (how does she keep them straight?) and "Ah, Paris,"
a medley that requires several listenings. It includes "La Vie en Rose,"
"April in Paris," and Dave Frishberg's clever parody, "Another
Song About Paris." Instrumentally here the group manages to sneak in
snatches of "Marsielles," "Parisian Thoroughfare" and
"An American in Paris." Bon!
The originals include the title tune, "Las Notas de Amor,"
a Latin feel number that gives solo space to all. This group enjoys playing
together and it shows. They swing hard when investigating "Joy Spring"
and "Aurex," the seldom-heard Shorty Rogers theme with the wonderful
rhythmic melody line. And check out the unlikely, up-tempo "Mr. Sandman"
for swinging, if only for Siers's fine brushwork. Vibist Kocher sparkles
throughout, both in solo and ensemble passages; you'll hear more from him.
Another Bonnier original is a bop-oriented line, "All of Paul," based on (what else?) "All of Me." Here
Bonnier's main collaborator, Paul Keller, shows his stuff. It's all great
fun. Hear this album.
