Suite William - A Jazz Cantata
Lyrics by William Shakespeare Music by Bess Bonnier
|
|
"Suite William" is a jazz cantata of 15 compositions, two of which are my compositions, music and lyrics. My partner, who wrote the lyrics to the remaining 13 is none other than that "timeless bard", William Shakespeare. Each song had a different jazz feel, a different texture. "It Was a Lover and His Lass" from As You Like It was written in the "groovy" big band style meant for dancing. The "XVIII Sonnet" is clearly a jazz ballad with a beautiful tenor sax solo (in the style of Coleman Hawkins) played by Detroit's own George Benson. It also features my piano solo.
"Sigh No More, Ladies" from Much Ado about Nothing, is a joyful Calypso style piece instructing ladies to free themselves from the foibles of unreliable men.
This project has been an exciting joyful experience for all of us. Music is the food of love.
